I looked all over for banana plugs that were of decent quality, did not require crimping or soldering, and did not cost a fortune. Stop looking and get these.
What's really funny is you can get ones similar to this for $.01 from other vendors, but then they ding you $5 per plug for shipping (no, not per shipment or per pair, per plug).
The photos are accurate. The base and the tip are screws, so maybe they make smaller tips? Regardless, they don't come loose. I guess you can feed skinny wire through the bottom like the picture shows, but I used the hole in the side for my 12 gauge wire. It fit with no problems and I snipped off the excess after screwing it down. My receiver is more suited to the skinny tips, but I was able to make these fit with no real problems. If you have a 5.1 system, then this set is all you need. You won't find a better deal (WITH shipping only $20).
Originally Amazon showed this as taking over three weeks, but ordered it late Saturday night, and it arrived via US Mail in less than a week.
I highly recommend the seller and the product. 24k Gold Connector Banana Plugs, Open Screw Type 24 Pack (12 Red, 12 Black)
This is a great little device, easy to add to your speaker cable and once in, it makes your life so much easier.
I had to move my 5:1 wires around after I bought a new receiver as the cables were not labeled and it has been 10 years since initial installation.
Of course when I wired my speakers, they were crossed (right/left, center) and also out of phase, it was effortless to just move them around, if I had to wired it in, it would have taken me a very long and frustrated time to do this.
I give it 4 stars only because it is bit cheaper quality then other brands, you need to make sure your wire is long enough to thread in and bend over and tighten it down, make sure you also tighten the top piece as it is also screwed in and it can be loose and cause intermittent connection.
Positive points:
#1: Super cheap price. If price is your only concern then these are the cheapest plugs you'll probably find anywhere (personally, if this plug was my only option, I'd rather use bare wire than these cheap plugs, given my following points).
Negative points:
#1: Banana tip is loose in my speakers and in my receiver.
#2: Banana tip is screwed into the "silver body" and it becomes loose very easy. All the tips of the plugs kept coming unscrewed (very frustrating!)
#3: Impossible to feed wire through rear of plug and make any type of reliable connection (I gave up).
#4: Due to negative point #3, you must put the wire through the top of the silver body of the plug which makes a mess when connecting on the receiver. And it is almost impossible to even use these if you have close binding posts on the receiver. All the wires smash into each other.
#5: Screw post does not even touch the tip of the plug. You better have thick wire (12 Gauge min) to fill up the gap.
#6: Screw post is hollowed out in the center so only about 10% of the post is pressing on the wire (very bad connection).
#7: Screw post presses the wire into the silver body instead of the gold plated banana tip (questionable connection at best).
#8: Cheap loose plastic ring on rear.
#9: Huge bored-out hole in the middle of the silver body. Would be better without the hole if you could only put the wire through the rear of the plug (but, as stated above in #3, this is impossible).
I've used other brands of banana plugs in the past (Monster, WBT,etc.) and I've never encountered these types of problems. I learned a huge lesson from this purchase ---> You definitely get what you pay for!!!
Here is a solution to a common complaint in the reviews for this product, that thinner wires aren't held securely: The connectors have black and red plastic rings added, to help identify polarity. If you have thinner cables, take the colored plastic rings off, and the connector can screw down tighter and make good contact; Or, strip the wire longer, and fold it so a double thickness goes in the connector hole.
Although most of the body is not gold plated, a small contact area of gold does exist to touch the wire inside the connector.
All the connectors are loosely assembled when shipped, You need to tighten all portions, before using. After doing this, I'm happy with the purchase.
These worked for me. I tested them in both Onkyo receivers (one is a higher power tx-sr805), a old Sony receiver (how embarrassing to admit I have a Sony...jk), my Atlantic Technology speakers, Klipsch speakers and Mission speakers. Never were they loose fitting they always fit snugly but I did not have to "force" them in either. Compression connections take a little getting used to for some, but I have seen a similar connector for KNU car audio power wire. I would recommend going with 12g for a tight connection, and obviously you need to strip a lot more casing off the wire if your going in through the bottom and bend it over the side of the fitting once you've made it though the threads. Leave the excess hanging out one of the holes. Tighten the bottom. Pull on the wire so that your satisfied it's in there. Trim the excess wire sticking out of the hole. I know, it's rocket science.
Full disclosure: I also tested the fit on my old M-504 Onkyo power amp and they WERE LOOSE, loose as in no way to use them loose! Loose as in there muse be different standards of banana plugs loose. So loose that if these did fit in the m-504, they would not have fit anywhere else like speakers or receivers - loose. You get the picture. I even had to edit my review to remove the undue slams to other reviewers. If your running a newer high end receiver (even a flagship) I would not hesitate to buy these, they should work fine (though I offer no guarantee lol).
Do not overpay for this type of connection, buy these. You need like 20 or more anyway. - Banana Plug - Quick Connect Banana Plugs - Surround Sound - Home Theater'
