When I ordered my new Mac Mini computer, I didn't realize it only had the newer Firewire 800 port and wouldn't connect to my older Firewire 400 devices out of the box. I tried a couple of local shops (who I won't name here) with "Computer Experts" onsite to help with such problems. One store expert attempted to get me to purchase an adapter cable for nearly $50 and the other store expert apparently wasn't familiar with this "new fangled Faarwaer" interface (sarcaasm intended).
I did an online search, found this product, purchased it. Upon arrival, plugged the adapter into my Mac Mini, plugged my legacy Firewire 400 device cable into other end of the adapter, and was back in business, no sweat!
Wish I had ordered this in the first place instead of dealing with those "experts"... elago FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter (White) for Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iMac and all other computers
I needed a way to connect an older Apple iSight camera to a newer Mac mini and the Apple supplied cable wouldn't work with the new Firewire 800 ports. Unfortunately, newer Firewire 800 cables wouldn't fit in the special stands for the iSight. This adapter allowed the older Firewire 400 to connect perfectly. A great solution.
Very nice adapter. It solves a problem I have perfectly and I saved money over what I would have paid if I had bought it in a store, such as Best Buy. The transaction was fine, no problems. Delivery was quick and the product was exactly as described and works perfectly. Buy this with confidence, it will work. Some cables don't fit exactly correct, this takes care of that problem.
This little device does work with the FireWire 800!! My Sony camcorder use the 800, but the MacBook Pro 13 doesn't support it!! Oh well, for a few dollars, this is well worth it. Quality is very good. I hope to do a product review soon...Good Luck and keep Shooting!
This is a simple add on to gain firewire access from old computers that have only 400FW. just plug in the adapter and connect the firewire cable. Works like a charm.
No need to buy the more expensive FW cable 400-800.
I almost ruined a $500 sound card using this product. I was having problems with my Apogee Duet cutting out and freezing up. I had to reset it multiple times by unplugging and replugging it in to my firewire port and sometimes it would shoot enough current into my sound card to freeze it up in such a way that a few more times would have fried its circuits. I contacted the manufacturer (Apogee) and a tech told me it was the connecter and that I should go with a firewire 400 to 800 cable instead. I did and have not had ONE SINGLE PROBLEM with my soundcard since. Avoid these adapters like the plague and buy a converter cable instead. - Firewire - Firewire 400 - Firewire 800 - Adapters'
